Session 6: Mikveh, Education, and Written & Oral Law

In Biographies, Contemporary Issues and Education

The first discussion of this meeting opened around Rabbi Cardozo’s use of the metaphor of the mikveh. Rabbi Cardozo converted at age sixteen, but came to realize that to “convert” only once is nearly meaningless. Immersing in a mikveh symbolizes an inner transformation, resembling emerging afresh from the womb; and he deeply desires to emerge transformed from each and every visit to the mikveh, as he did upon his conversion many years ago.

  • Thoughts on Forgiveness – The Man Who Made Me Jewish

In Biographies and Jewish Thought and Philosophy

There is only one time I have ever forgiven an anti-Semite. But it was for a good reason. He had successfully helped me to become Jewish!

  • My Mother Bertha Lopes Cardozo z.l.

    In Biographies

The year of mourning for my dear mother z.l. ended last Friday. To my great surprise it became a most unusual experience which I did not anticipate. Suddenly I was once again allowed to listen to music (one of the great loves of my life), go to celebrations like chatunoth, and buy new garments. I returned to being like everybody else, so I am told. The world is back to normal.

  • My Mother a’h’, Heroism and the Gavra Raba

    In Biographies

It is difficult for a child to give an appropriate appraisal of his/her parents. Sometimes it is the intimacy of people which makes it impossible to fully grasp the greatness of another person. Too much familiarity causes too little appreciation. Only when some kind of separation has set in and the other is no longer immediately available, do thoughts break through which allow a better understanding of those who have been the closest to us.

  • Abraham Lopes Cardozo z.l. – “Ne’im Zemiroth”

In Biographies and Jewish Thought and Philosophy

When the great trumpet will sound and the dead will arise from their graves, the shortest walk to the place of assembly will be for those who were buried on the Mount of Olives. But soon they will be joined by all those who were laid to rest on Har Hamenuchot, a little further away. Others will come from places far removed. Spain and Portugal, Iraq, Iran, Western and Eastern Europe, Africa, the USA and many other countries. They will all walk up to the mountain of Jerusalem.

    In Biographies

My hands are shaking and my body is trembling
As I hear of the tragedy which befell my dear friends
Mordechai Rafael ben Joseph Schijveschuurder z.l.
    His wife and three children
Who came up to the land
To join their people and to fulfill
    The commandment to settle
    From the land of exile
    The country of Holland

  • Rabbi Bezalel Rakov z.l. of Gateshead

    In Biographies and Miscellaneous

"Death is the supreme festival on the road to freedom"

Rarely do I write about my personal feelings. However, singular circumstances brought about by Divine intervention cause us to realize that our customary ways are but the dream state in which we believe we live, until a perpetual murmur from an eternal world wakes us up.

The first astronaut to ever be launched into space was Phileas Fogg. He was sent there by Jules Verne, famed author of 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth. The launching took place in the year 1873 and became known world wide through Verne's masterpiece: Around the World in 80 Days.
